The author studies the generalized continued fraction expansion, introduced by \textit{F. Schweiger} [Sitzungsber., Abt. II, Österr. Akad. Wiss., Math.-Naturwiss. Kl. 212, 69--77 (2003; Zbl 1113.11045)]. This expansion is induced by the map \(T_\varepsilon: (0,1] \rightarrow (0,1]\) given by \[ T_\varepsilon(x) = {{-1+(k+1)x}\over{1+\varepsilon - k \varepsilon x}} \] whenever \(x \in (1/(k+1), 1/k]\), where \(\varepsilon\) may depend on \(k\). As with the Gauss map in the case of the usual simple continued fraction expansion, this map gives rise to a sequence of partial quotients given by \(k_1(x) = \lfloor 1/x \rfloor\) and \(k_n(x) = k_1(T_\varepsilon^{n-1}(x))\), as well as recursively defined sequences corresponding to the convergents in the simple continued fraction setting, called the GCF-convergents. In the present paper, the author proves that if \(\varepsilon \geq -1\), the sequence of GCF-convergents of a number \(x \in (0,1)\) does in fact converge to \(x\). Additionally, when \(\varepsilon \in (-1, 1]\), several metrical results are derived on the typical growth and distribution of the partial quotients and the typical speed of convergence of the GFC-convergents. These extend results on Engel continued fractions of \textit{Y. Hartono}, \textit{C. Kraaikamp} and \textit{F. Schweiger} [J. Théor. Nombres Bordx. 14, No.~2, 497--516 (2002; Zbl 1067.11042)] and \textit{C. Kraaikamp} and \textit{J. Wu} [Monatsh. Math. 143, No.~4, 285--298 (2004; Zbl 1072.11061)] to generalized continued fractions.
