Matrices in \({\mathbb C}^{m \times n}\) are not invertible if \(m \neq n\). More precisely, finite dimensional matrices with more columns than rows have no left inverses while those with more rows than columns have no right inverses. In the paper under review, the author generalizes these simple facts to bi-infinite matrices acting on weighted \(\ell_p\) spaces, \(1 \leq p \leq \infty\). The results are applied in the area of time frequency analysis and are used to obtain necessary conditions on the identifiability of pseudo-differential operators which are characterized by a band-limitation of the operators' Kohn-Nirenberg symbols [cf. \textit{G. E. Pfander} and \textit{D. F. Walnut}, Sampl. Theory Signal Image Process. 5, No. 2, 183--200 (2006; Zbl 1156.47305)].
