The authors investigate the occurence of travelling waves for a 3-dimensional evolution equation. The special structure of the equations allows to reduce the equations to a parameter dependent family of Hamiltionian equations with one degree of freedom. Depending on the parameters, which also include first integrals of equations occuring in the reduction procedure, the reduced Hamiltonian system has a rich structure of homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits, which correspond to solitary waves in the original system. These solitary waves are computed explicitely in the final part of the article.
