The main objective of this paper is to describe the universal enveloping algebras of finite dimensional Lie algebras that satisfy the following constraints: their Hochschild complex, seen as differential graded Lie algebra, is quasi-isomorphic to its Hochschild cohomology. This enlarges and completes previous work of the authors [\textit{M. Bordemann, A. Makhlouf} and \textit{T. Petit}, J. Algebra 285, No. 2, 623--648 (2005; Zbl 1099.17010)]. Application of the formality theorem of Kontsevich provides the proof for the abelian case, while for the non-abelian algebras the twisted Kontsevich formality map is used to reduce the problem. As important example, the formality of the universal enveloping algebras of the affine algebras \(\mathfrak{gl}(n,\mathbb{K})\oplus\mathbb{K}^{n}\) is proven. This approach enables the authors to consider an alternative point of view for rigidity and strong rigidity. Applications to the deformation theory of linear Poisson structures and their linearizability are presented.
