The authors consider nonlinear Sobolev equations, where a damping term \(\nabla \cdot (b(u)\nabla u_t)\) is included, and present a discontinuous Galerkin method with interior penalties for the nonlinear Sobolev equations. A semi-discrete time scheme and a family of fully-discrete time approximate schemes, which can be symmetric or nonsymmetric, are formulated. \(H_p\)-version error estimates are analyzed for these schemes. An a priori \(L^{\infty}(H^1)\) error estimate is obtained for the semi-discrete time scheme and similarly, \(l^{\infty}(H^1)\) and \(l^2(H^1)\) error estimates are obtained for the fully-discrete time schemes. These results also indicate that spatial rates in \(H^1\) and the time truncation errors in \(L^2\) are optimal.
