The main theme of the present paper is related to the so-called invariant subspace problem. A~famous theorem of \textit{V. I. Lomonosov} [Funct.\ Anal.\ Appl. 7, 213--214 (1973); transl. from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 7, No. 3, 55--56 (1973; Zbl 0293.47003)] states that an operator has a nontrivial invariant subspace if it commutes with a nonscalar operator that commutes with a nonzero compact operator. A subalgebra \(\mathcal{A}\) of \(L(X)\) (=the space of all continuous operators on \(X\)) is said to be transitive if \({\mathcal A}x\) is dense in \(X\) for every nonzero \(x\in X\) or, equivalently, the elements of \(\mathcal{A}\) have no common nontrivial closed invariant subspaces. In the present paper, the authors make a detailed study of various types of operator algebras (such as localizing algebras and sesquitransitive algebras) to guarantee that a transitive algebra of operators is ``large'' in some senses. Just to give an idea of the main content of the paper, we cite the following results, the first one being a generalization of Jacobson's density theorem and the second one being similar to a result of Lomonosov in the real Banach space setting. (a) Suppose that \(X\) is a vector space over an arbitrary field, then every algebraically sesquitransitive subring of \(L(X)\) is strictly dense in \(L(X)\). (b) In the case where \(X\) is real, every sesquitransitive subalgebra of \(L(X)\) containing a compact operator is WOT-dense in \(L(X)\). The paper is carefully written and rich in content. It also contains a collection of useful references.
