Let \(H\) be a complex Hilbert space and, for each compact operator \(A\in L(H)\), let \(\{s_n(A)\}_{n=1}^\infty\) be the sequence of its singular numbers. For \(a,\alpha>0\), the exponential class \(E(a,\alpha)\) is defined as the collection of all compact operators \(A\in L(H)\) with the property that \(s_n(A)=O(\exp(-an^\alpha))\). For instance, if \(A\) is an integral operator with a real analytic kernel defined on \([0,1]^d\times[0,1]^d\), then \(A\in E(a,1/d)\) for some \(a>0\). Composition operators on Bergman spaces \(B^2(\Omega)\) over \(d\)-dimensional complex domains \(\Omega\) with strictly contractive symbols belong to \(E(a,1/d)\) for some \(a>0\). More generally, \(E(a,1/d)\) includes a large class of transfer operators on \(B^2(\Omega)\) [see \textit{O.\,F.\thinspace Bandtlow} and \textit{O.\,Jenkinson}, Adv.\ Math.\ 218, No.\,3, 902--925 (2008; Zbl 1145.37016)]. The paper under review is mainly concerned with upper bound estimates for the norm of \((z-A)^{-1}\) when \(A\in E(a,\alpha)\). These estimates involve the distance of \(z\) to the spectrum of \(A\) and a certain quantity measuring in a certain sense the deviation of \(A\) from normality. As a corollary, the author obtains upper bound estimates for the Hausdorff distance between the spectra of two operators in the class \(E(a,\alpha)\). Estimates of this type have been previously obtained for operators in the Schatten classes in [\textit{M.\,I.\thinspace Gil'}, ``Operator functions and localization of spectra'' (Lecture Notes in Mathematics 1830; Berlin:\ Springer) (2003; Zbl 1032.47001)] and in [\textit{O.\,F.\thinspace Bandtlow}, Math.\ Nachr.\ 267, 3--11 (2004; Zbl 1056.47004)], and for operators in \(\Phi\)-ideals in [\textit{A.\,Pokrzywa}, Linear Algebra Appl.\ 69, 121--130 (1985; Zbl 0581.47013)].
