Using the classification of the finite simple groups, the author proves that if \(X\) is a finite simple group with abelian Sylow \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) then one of the following holds: \(N_X(P)/C_X(P)\) contains an involution; \(P\) is cyclic; \(P\cong C_2\times C_2\); \(X\cong\text{PSL}(2,p^e)\); \(X\cong J_1\) or \(^2(3^{2n+1})\) with \(p=2\), and \(N_X(P)/C_X(P)\cong 7:3\). This result implies Proposition 6.4 from the paper by the author and \textit{A. Watanabe} [J. Algebra 237, No. 2, 719-734 (2001; Zbl 0989.20012)] and can be used to verify \textit{J. L. Alperin}'s weight conjecture [see Representations of finite groups, Proc. Conf., Arcata/Calif. 1986, Pt. 1, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 47, 369--379 (1987; Zbl 0657.20013)] for the principal \(p\)-block of a finite group with abelian Sylow \(p\)-subgroup.
