The authors prove the stability of the linear equation \[ F(\alpha x+\beta y+\gamma)=AF(x)+BF(y)+C\tag{1} \] in its most general form (i.e., with \(\gamma\) and \(C\) not necessarily vanishing). Roughly speaking, they prove that if a mapping \(f\), defined on some linear space \(X\) and taking values in a Banach space \(Y\), satisfies \[ \| f(\alpha x+\beta y+\gamma)-Af(x)-Bf(y)-C\| \leq\varphi (x,y), \] with some control mapping \(\varphi\colon X^2\to[0,\infty)\), then there exists a unique solution \(F\) of (1), such that \[ \| F(x)-f(x)\| \leq\psi(x), \] where the new control mapping \(\psi:X\to [0,\infty)\) depends on \(\varphi\) (we omit subtle details here). A result from the paper of \textit{G.-L. Forti} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 295, No. 1, 127--133 (2004; Zbl 1052.39031)] is used as a main tool in the proof.
