In 2000, Nicole Brillouët-Belluot, during the \(38^{th}\) International Symposium on Functional Equations, asked whether the functional equation \[ x+f(y+f(x))=y+f(x+f(y)) \tag{\(*\)} \] has a continuous solution \(f: \mathbb R \to \mathbb R\). Later \textit{J. Jarczyk} and \textit{W. Jarczyk} [Aequationes Math. 72, No. 1--2, 198--200 (2006; Zbl 1101.39009)] proved that the answer is negative, while M. Sablik observed that the equation above admits analytic solutions \(f: \mathbb C \to \mathbb C\). In the present paper the author proves some properties of the solutions of (\(*\)) when \(f\) is a self-mapping on an abelian group \(G\). In particular he proves that if \(f:G \to G\) is a solution of (\(*\)) with \(f(0)=0\), then \(2f\) is additive. From this result he can derive a description of the behaviour of the solutions from \(\mathbb R\) to \(\mathbb R\) and from \(\mathbb C\) to \(\mathbb C\).
