The authors consider pairs of selfadjoint operators \(A\) and \(B\) on a complex Hilbert space \(\mathcal H\) such that \(A\) has has nonnegative spectrum and \(D_t = e^{-tB} - e^{-tA}\) is trace class or Hilbert-Schmidt class. The aim is to derive upper bounds for the moments of the negative eigenvalues of \(B\), i.e. for \(\sum_{\lambda\in\sigma^-(B)} | \lambda| \). To this end, a one-to-one correspondence between the negative eigenvalues of \(B\) and the zeros of a holomorphic function \(h\) depending on \(B\) is established. Application of the Jensen identity to \(h\) and norm estimates for trace class respectively Hilbert-Schmidt class operators yield the desired estimates for the moments of the negative eigenvalues of \(B\). These estimates in turn give estimates for the number of eigenvalues less than a given negative number. Finally, the general results are applied to the Schrödinger operator with Kato potentials with \(A=-\Delta\) and \(B\) being the Schrödinger operator with potential. The authors show that their estimates on the moments of the eigenvalues is different from the well-known Lieb-Thirring estimates. By a scaling argument, they show that it depends on the scaling paramter whether their bound or the Lieb-Thirring bound gives a stronger result.
