The paper deals with the partition function of \(N \times N\) random Hermitian matrices: \(\tilde Z_N({\mathbf t}) = \int\exp\{-N \, \text{Tr} \, [V_{\mathbf t} (M)]\}\,dM \), where \(V_{\mathbf t}(\lambda) = \lambda^2/2+\sum_{j=1}^vt_j\lambda^j\). The coefficients of the large \(N\) asymptotic expansion of log\( \, \tilde Z_N(t)\) are given as functions of \({\mathbf t}\). A continuum limit of the Toda lattice hierarchy is derived and used to generate explicit expressions for the coefficients inductively. The \(g^{th}\) coefficient of the asymptotic expansion is known as a generating function for graphical enumeration on Riemann surfaces of genus \(g\).
