The notion of multiplier Hopf \(\ast\)-algebra was introduced by \textit{A. van Daele} in [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 342, 917--932 (1994; Zbl 0809.16047)]. The present paper answers the question: when do the group \(C^*\)-algebras \(C_0(G)\) and \(C^*_r(G)\) of a locally compact group \(G\) have a dense multiplier Hopf \(\ast\)-subalgebra? It is shown that the following properties are equivalent: 1. \(G\) has a compact open subgroup. 2. \(C_0(G)\) has a dense multiplier Hopf \(\ast\)-subalgebra. 3. \(C^*_r(G)\) has a dense multiplier Hopf \(\ast\)-subalgebra. 4. There are non-zero elements \(a\in C^*_r(G)\) and \(f\in C_0(G)\) such that \(aM(f)\) has finite rank. 5. There are non-zero elements \(a\in C^*_r(G)\) and \(f\in C_0(G)\) such that \(aM(f)=M(f)a\). (Here \(M(f)\) denotes the operator of multiplication by \(f\in C_0(G)\) on \(L^2(G)\).)
