The authors focus on answering the question whether the pressure enforces a generic finite-time breakdown, or whether the presence of Poisson forcing preserves global regularity for a ``large'' set of initial configurations. Reformulating the system of full Euler-Poisson equations with its Riemann invariants, the authors provide sufficient conditions for ``large'' sets of subcritical initial configurations which yield global smooth solution and then they give examples of finite-time breakdown for supercritical initial data. By combining these results, they finally confirm the existence of a critical threshold phenomena for the full Euler-Poisson equations, i.e., global regularity is shown to depend on whether or not the initial configuration of the Riemann invariants and the density crosses an intrinsic critical threshold.
