A model for the mass-spring of electrostatically microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) is studied. After introducing some scaling, the problem with neglected inertial effects reduces to the first-order periodic problem: \[ \begin{cases} \omega u'(t)=u^{\frac{2}{3}}(t)-u(t)-\lambda\cos^2(\frac{t}{2}),\\ u(0)=u(2\pi), \end{cases} \] where \(\omega, \lambda>0\) are physical parameters. For \(\omega\) larger than the critical value \(\omega_0=\frac{2}{3},\) nonexistence and also existence of one or two solutions are proved for some range of the eigenvalue \(\lambda.\) Neglecting the damping term, the authors then consider the second-order initial value problem \[ \begin{cases} \varepsilon^2 v''=1-v-\lambda\frac{\cos^2(\frac{t}{2})}{v^2},\quad v>0,\\ v(0)=\alpha>0;\;v'(0)=0, \end{cases} \] where \(\varepsilon>0\) is a small parameter and \(\lambda\) as before. They prove existence of \(2\pi\) periodic solutions for which they determine the number of critical points.
