The authors propose an implicit discretization of the \(p\)-harmonic map heat flow into the sphere \(S^2\) that enjoys a discrete energy inequality and convergence under only a mild constraint to a weak solution. They propose and analyze a fully practical iterative scheme for the nonlinear equations in each time step. Computational experiments to motivate possible finite-time finite-energy blow-up behavior of solutions for \(p\neq 2\) are included.
