Characters of Fredholm modules over operator algebras play a key role in the study of noncommutative geometric index formulas that generalize the classical Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators on compact manifolds. The author shows that if \(G\) is a semisimple Lie group of real rank one and \(\Gamma\) is a discrete cocompact subgroup of \(G\), then the entire cyclic character cocycle \(\text{Ch}_{\varepsilon}(\mathcal{E}_{\Gamma}) \in CC_{\varepsilon}^{0}(\mathcal{A} (\Gamma)) \) is cohomologous in local cyclic cohomology to the canonical trace on \(\mathcal{A}(\Gamma) \) as predicted by Connes for the unbounded \(\theta\)-summable Fredholm module \(\mathcal{E} _{\Gamma}\) over \(\mathcal{A}(\Gamma) \subset C_{r}^{\ast}(\Gamma) \) constructed by Connes and representing Kasparov's \(\gamma \)-element \(\gamma_{\Gamma}\in KK^{\Gamma}(\mathbb{C},\mathbb{C}) \). Furthermore, the author finds a compatibility relation between Connes' character cocycle \(\text{Ch}_{\varepsilon}(\mathcal{E}) \) of an unbounded \(\theta\)-summable Fredholm module \(\mathcal{E}\) over an algebra \(A\) in the entire cyclic cochain complex \(CC_{\varepsilon}^{\ast}(A) \) and the bivariant Chern-Connes character \(\text{ch}_{\text{biv}}([ \mathcal{E}]) \) in the bivariant local cohomology group \(HC_{\text{loc}}^{0}(\bar{A}) \) for the K-homology class \([ \mathcal{E}] \in KK(\bar{A},\mathbb{C}) \), where \(i:A\to\bar{A}\) gives the enveloping \(C^*\)-algebra of \(A\). Indeed, it is shown that \(\eta([\text{Ch}_{\varepsilon}(\mathcal{E}) ]) =i^{\ast}(\text{Ch}_{\text{biv}}([ \mathcal{E}])) \), where \(\eta\) is the natural transformation \(HC_{\varepsilon}\to HC_{\text{loc}}\) between the entire cyclic cohomology and the local cyclic cohomology.
