Let \(A\) be an ordered Banach algebra. The authors study the problem of domination in \(A\). That is, if \( 0\leq a \leq b\) and \(b\) has a certain property, then, when does \(a\) inherit this property? They consider the problem when \(b\) is an inessential element relative to a closed ideal \(F\) in the algebra \(A\) and show that (among other things) each element \(a\) in the center is also inessential, relative to \(F\) whenever the spectral radius is monotone in the quotient algebra \(A/F\). They also consider the domination problem for rank one and finite elements and give examples where the domination problem holds and where it does not hold. They introduce \(r\)-inessential operators on a Banach lattice \(E\) and show that if \(E\) is Dedekind complete, \(0\leq S \leq T\), and \(T\) is \(r\)-inessential, then \(S\) is also \(r\)-inessential.
