The authors develop a numerical method to solve a one-dimensional singularly perturbed parabolic initial-boundary value problem. This method is based on the implicit Euler method for the temporal discretization and the B-spline collocation method in the spatial direction with a piecewise uniform Shishkin mesh for the system of ordinary differential equations resulting from the time discretization. It is found that the proposed algorithm gives highly accurate numerical results and higher order of convergence than an upwind finite difference scheme. It is seen that the accuracy in the numerical results for the proposed scheme is comparable to that obtained by the exponentially fitted method with a uniform mesh.
