Let \(S\) be a compact oriented surface of genus \(g\) with complex structure with a holomorphic Abelian differential \(\Phi\) on \(S\) with finite zero set \(\Sigma\); the pair \((S,\Phi)\) is a translation surface in the sense of \textit{A. Eskin, H. Masur} and \textit{A. Zorich} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 97, 61--179 (2003; Zbl 1037.32013)]. There is an associated vector field on \(S\setminus\Sigma\) giving a well-defined vertical foliation and hence a flow in the vertical direction on the complement of the critical leaves of the foliation. This flow decomposes the surface into finitely many invariant components, each of which is either periodic or minimal. For each partition of \(2g-2\) into positive integers, there is an associated moduli space of translation surfaces with the property that the orders of the zeros of the differential are given by the partition, and this moduli space is a stratum. In this paper, optimal bounds are found in each stratum for the number of minimal components, the number of periodic components, and on the total number of invariant components.
