An equation of mixed type is under consideration: \[ L_u\equiv u_{xx}+ \text{sgn\,}y|y|^m u_{yy}- b^2 u= 0, \] where \(b= \text{const}\geq 0\), in a rectangular domain \(D= \{(x, y): 0< x< 1\), \(-\alpha< y<\beta\}\); \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) are given positive numbers. In this paper, for \(0< m< 1\), a criterion of uniqueness and existence of a solution of the following Dirichlet problem is established: Find a function \(u(x, y)\) defined on \(D\) which satisfies the conditions \[ \begin{gathered} u(x,y)\in C(\overline D)\cap C^1(D)\cap C^2(D_+\cup D_-),\\ Lu(x,y)\equiv 0,\quad (x,y)\in D_+\cup D_-,\\ u(0,y)= u(1,y)= 0,\quad -\alpha\leq y\leq \beta,\\ u(x,\beta)= f(x),\quad 0\leq x\leq 1,\\ u(x,-\alpha)= g(x),\quad 0\leq x\leq 1,\end{gathered} \] where \(f\) and \(g\) are given sufficiently smooth functions such that \(f(0)= f(1)= g(0)= g(1)= 0\).
