Let \(G \subset \mathcal{O} (n)\) be a compact group of isometries in Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\), and let \(X\) be a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\) which is invariant under the action of \(G\). Let \(\partial X\) be the boundary of \(X\), which in general is not assumed to be smooth, and assume that for some sufficiently small \(\rho > 0\), \(\text{vol} (\partial X)_{\rho}\leq c\rho\), where \((\partial X)_{\rho}:=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:\text{dist}(x,\partial X)<\rho\}\) (\(c\) is a positive constant). Let \(A_{0}\) be a symmetric, classical pseudodifferential operator in \(L^{2} (\mathbb{R}^{n})\) of order \(2m\) with \(G\)-invariant Weyl symbol \(a\) and principal symbol \(a_{2m},\) and assume that \((A_{0} u,u) \leq c \| u \|_{m}^{2}\) for some \(c > 0\) and all \(u \in C_{c}^{\infty} (X),\) where \(\| \cdot \|_{s}\) is a norm in the Sobolev space \(H^{s} (\mathbb{R}^{n}).\) Consider further the Friedrichs extension of the operator \[ \text{res}\circ A\circ\text{ext}:\mathcal{C}_{c}^{\infty}(X)\to L^{2}(X), \] which is a selfadjoint operator in \(L^{2}(X),\) and denote it by \(A\). \(\text{res}:L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\to L^{2}(X)\) denotes the restriction operator and \(\text{ext}:\mathcal{C}_{c}^{\infty}(X)\to L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\) is the extension operator. The main purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the spectral counting function \[ N_{\chi}(\lambda)=d_{\chi}\sum_{t\leq\lambda}\mu_{\chi}(t), \] where \(\mu_{\chi}(\lambda)\) is the multiplicity of any irreducible representation of dimension \(d_{\chi}\) corresponding to the character \(\chi\) in the \(\chi\)-isotypic component \(\text{res}\mathcal{H}_{\chi}\) of \(L^{2}(X)\). \(N_{\chi} (\lambda)\) is equal to the number of eigenvalues of \(A\), counting multiplicities, less or equal \(\lambda\) and with eigenfunctions in \(\text{res}\mathcal{H}_{\chi}\), where \(\mu_{\chi}(\lambda)\) is the multiplicity of any irreducible representation of dimension \(d_{\chi}\) corresponding to the character \(\chi\) in the \(\chi\)-isotypic component \(\text{res}\mathcal{H}_{\chi}\) of \(L^{2} (X)\). \(N_{\chi} (\lambda)\) is equal to the number of eigenvalues of \(A\), counting multiplicities, less or equal \(\lambda\) and with eigenfunctions in \(\text{res}\mathcal{H}_{\chi},\) if \((-\infty, \lambda)\) contains no points of the essential spectrum, and is equal to \(\infty\) otherwise. It is proved that if \(G\) is a finite group, then the spectrum of \(A\) is discrete, and that the spectral counting function \((-\infty,\lambda)\) contains no points of the essential spectrum, and equals \(\infty\) otherwise. In this case, as \(\lambda \to +\infty,\) the spectral counting function \(N_{\chi}(\lambda)\) is given by \[ N_{\chi} (\lambda)= \frac{d_{\chi}^{2}}{(2 \pi)^{n}} \;\frac{\text{vol} (a_{2m}^{-1} ((-\infty,1]))}{|G|}\;\frac{\text{vol} (a_{2m}^{-1} ((-\infty,1]))}{|G|} \;\lambda^{n/2m}+ O(\lambda^{(n-\varepsilon)/2m}) \] for all \(\varepsilon\in (0,1/2)\), where \(|G|\) denotes the cardinality of \(G\).
