The authors formulate and analyze a modified boundary element method for the exterior Dirichlet boundary value problem of the Helmholtz equation which is stable for all wave numbers. In contrast to other existing approaches the proposed method relies on the use of boundary integral operators which are available in standard boundary finite methods. Stability and regularization of the modified method are studied. At the end of the article several numerical examples for the Dirichlet problem are given.
