Let \(a, b\) and \(c\) be fixed coprime positive integers. In this paper the author proves that if \(a^2 + b^2 = c^3\) and \(b\) is an odd prime, then the equation \(a^x + b^y = c^z\) has only the positive integer solution \((x, y, z) = (2, 2, 3)\). The proof relies on a new result for the existence of primitive divisors of Lucas numbers given by \textit{Yu. Bilu, G. Hanrot} and \textit{P. M. Voutier} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 539, 75--122 (2001; Zbl 0995.11010)], results of \textit{P. M. Voutier} [Math. Comput. 64, No. 210, 869--888 (1995; Zbl 0832.11009)] and on a previous paper of the author [J. Number Theory 55, No. 2, 209--221 (1995; Zbl 0852.11015)] concerning exponential Diophantine equations.
