In the paper under review, the author studies an important class of topological stacks, namely, topological stacks with the slice property. This class includes stacks such as Deligne-Mumford topological stacks, quotient stacks of compact Lie group actions on completely regular spaces and quotient stacks of proper Lie group actions on locally compact spaces. The author first obtains an interrelationship between the various Galois categories of stacks using the slice property. Then by exploiting the relation between the Galois theory of covering stacks of a topological stack \(\mathcal{X}\) and the group theory of its fundamental group, the author obtains a formula for the fundamental group of the coarse moduli space \(\mathcal{X}_{\text{mod}}\) of \(\mathcal{X}\) (Theorem 8.3). Interesting applications of the result to quotients of group actions are also given. For a topological group \(G\) acting on a connected, locally path-connected, semilocally 1-connected topological space \(X\), the author obtains an exact sequence relating the fundamental groups \(\pi_1(X)\) and \(\pi_1(X/G)\). In another application, the author generalizes and obtains the stack version of a formula of \textit{M. A. Armstrong} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 84, 267-271 (1982; Zbl 0505.57017)] for the fundamental group of the coarse quotient \(X/G\) of a topological group \(G\) acting faithfully on a topological space \(X\).
