In the paper under review, the author introduces an invariant, called a \(p\)-norm, on 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries on knots in homology 3-spheres. In fact, in terms of this \(p\)-norm, a previous result of the author [Osaka J. Math. 43, No. 4, 823--837 (2006; Zbl 1141.57004)] can be regarded as giving a necessary condition on such a 3-manifold to have the same Reidemeister torsion as a lens space. Based on this, together with number theoretical calculations concerning cyclotomic polynomials, the author obtains a characterization of Dehn surgeries on iterated torus knots in the 3-sphere which yield 3-manifolds with the same Reidemeister torsion as lens spaces. This implies that, by comparing with a result of \textit{C. McA. Gordon} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 275, 687--708 (1983; Zbl 0519.57005)], there are infinitely many iterated torus knots each of which admits a Dehn surgery yielding a 3-manifold which is not homeomorphic to any lens space, but has the same Reidemeister torsion as some lens space.
