Let \(X_i\), \(i\leq d\), be \(d\) generic \(3\times 3\) matrices and \(C_{3d}\) be the trace algebra which is generated by all traces of products \(\text{tr}(X_{i_1}\cdots X_{i_k})\) over a field of characteristic zero. The authors prove that the minimal degree of the set of defining relations of \(C_{3d}\) is equal to \(7\) (\(d\geq 3\)), determine all relations of minimal degree (in particular, find the dimension of the defining relations of degree 7) and find the defining relations of degree 8 for \(d=3\).
