Let \(f\in {\mathcal H}_b(E)\) be a holomorphic function of bounded type on a complex Banach space \(E\). The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions on the derivative d\(f\) to admit a factorization \(f=g\circ S\) with \(g \in {\mathcal H}_b(Y)\) and \(S \in {\mathcal A}(E;Y)\) for a given operator ideal \({\mathcal A}\). For example, it is known that \(f\) admits a factorization \(f=g\circ S\) with \(S\) compact iff d\(f\) takes bounded sets of \(E\) into relatively compact sets of the topological dual space \(E'\). The crucial point is the following definition of the families \({\mathcal C}_{\mathcal A}(E')= \{A \subseteq E' : A \subseteq T'(B_{F'}) \) for some \(T \in {\mathcal A}(E;F)\}\) for a given operator ideal \({\mathcal A}\) and Banach space \(E\). This gives the possibility to characterize the belonging of multilinear mappings or homogeneous polynomials to ideals by certain families of bounded sets like \({\mathcal C}_{\mathcal A}(E')\). At last, some results of this paper. A function \(f\in {\mathcal H}_b(E)\) admits a factorization \(f=g\circ S\), where \(g\) is a holomorphic function of bounded type and \(S'\) is a Rosenthal or Banach-Saks or Grothendieck operator iff the weak\(^\ast\) closure of the absolutely convex hull of d\(f(B)\) is a Rosenthal or Banach-Saks or Grothendieck set, respectively, for any bounded set \(B\subseteq E\).
