Let \(\Gamma_ n(q)\) denote the geometry of hyperbolic lines of the symplectic polar space \(W(2n-1,q), n \geq 2.\) The author proves that for \(q\not= 2\) every hyperplane of \(\Gamma_ n(q)\) arises from a hyperplane of the surrounding projective space PG\((2n-1,q)\). For \(q=2\) there is another family of hyperplanes obtained as follows. Let \(Q\) be a nonsingular quadric of PG\((2n-1,q)\) which is embedded in \(W(2n-1,q)\), then PG\((2n-1,q)\setminus Q\) is a hyperplane of \(\Gamma_ n(q)\). The symplectic dual polar space \(DW(2n-1,q)\) admits an isometric embedding into the hermitian dual polar space \(DH(2n-1,q^ 2)\). The author shows that for odd \(n\) every hyperplane of \(\Gamma_ n(q)\) gives rise to a hyperplane of \(DH(2n-1,q^ 2)\). In this way he constructs new hyperplanes of \(DH(2n-1,4)\), which do not arise from the Grassmann embedding.
