In this paper it is shown that any homomorphism from the homeomorphism group of a compact 2-manifold, with the compact-open topology, or equivalently, with the topology of uniform convergence, into a separable topological group is automatically continuous. Let \(G\) be a group and \(W\subseteq G\) be a symmetric group. We say that \(W\) is \textit{countably syndetic} if there are countably many left-translates of \(W\) whose union cover \(G.\) Moreover, if \(G\) is a topological group, we say that \(G\) is \textit{Steinhaus} if for some \(k>1\) and all symmetric, countably syndetic \(W\subseteq G,\) \(Int(W^{k})\neq\emptyset.\) The proof of the result mentioned above is rather technical. The author shows it by proving that \(Homeo(M)\) is Steinhaus.
