For a finitely generated module \(M\) over a local ring \(R\), the projective dimension \(\text{pd}_R(M)\), Gorenstein dimension \(\text{G-dim}_R(M)\), and complete intersection dimension \(\text{CI-dim}_R(M)\) are invariants of \(M\) (not necessarily finite) satisfying the inequalities \(\text{G-dim}_R(M) \leq \text{CI-dim}_R(M) \leq \text{pd}_R(M)\). \textit{L. L. Avramov} and \textit{H.-B. Foxby} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 75, No. 2, 241--270 (1997; Zbl 0901.13011)] also defined what it means for a local homomorphism \(R \to S\) to have finite Gorenstein dimension. A similar approach is taken by \textit{A. Blanco} and \textit{J. Majadas} [J. Algebra 208, No. 1, 35--42 (1998; Zbl 0940.13004)] to study local homomorphisms of finite complete intersection dimension. Given two local ring homomorphisms \(\phi: R \to S\) and \(\psi:S \to T\) of finite Gorenstein dimension, Avramov and Foxby asked whether the composition \(\psi \circ \phi\) is also of finite Gorenstein dimension. In the paper under review the author gives a positive answer in the case when \(\psi\) has finite complete intersection dimension.
