      Let \(X\) be a set, \(M(X)\) the free magma over \(X\), and \(L(X)\) the free Lie algebra over \(X\). A Hall set is an ordered subset \(H\) of \(M(X)\) such that its image in \(L(X)\) under the canonical quotient map from the free associative algebra \(A(X)\) over \(X\) to \(L(X)\) forms a basis for \(L(X)\). The author considers a particular Hall set and relates it to the map \(\gamma \colon A^+(X)\to L(X)\) defined by \[ \gamma(x_1\cdots x_n)=[x_1,[\dots[x_{n-1},x_n]\dots]], \] where \(A*(X)\) is the maximal ideal in \(A(X)\) generated by \(X\).
