In the present paper, the author proves an exact form of the law of the iterated logarithm for the discrepancy of a class of lacunary sequences, by this means improving a deep result of \textit{W. Philipp} [Acta Arith. 26, 241--251 (1975; Zbl 0263.10020)]. More precisely, he shows that \[ \limsup_{N \to \infty} \frac{N D_N(\langle \theta^k x \rangle)}{\sqrt{N \log \log N}} = \limsup_{N \to \infty} \frac{N D_N^*(\langle \theta^k x \rangle)}{\sqrt{N \log \log N}} = \sigma_\theta \] for almost all \(x\), where the number \(\sigma_\theta\) depends on number-theoretic properties of \(\theta\) in an complex and fascinating way. This result is a breakthrough, and will be of outstanding importance for future research in the field.
