This book deals with the contact problems in elasticity, it contains two books: the first, published in 1953 deals with contact problems in the classical theory of elasticity; this is the one that was translated form Russian into English in 1961. The second book, published in 1980, included the first, and then had new sections on contact problems for viscoelastic materials, and rough contact problems. In this new translation, the original text and the mathematical analysis have been completely revised, new material has been added, and the material appearing in the 1980 Russian translation has been completely rewritten. In addition there are three essays by students of Galin, bringing the analysis up to date. The Chapter one contains a review of research before 1953, and Chapter two deals with the fundamental equations for the plane elasticity theory and with the stress and displacements in a semi-infinite elastic plane. The Chapter two deals with boundary conditions for plane contact problems, frictionless punch problems, frictional punch problems and sliding contact with Coulomb friction. The Chapter four contains problems related to moving punches, and to anisotropic media, both are formulated in terms of functions of two complex variables. The Chapter five contains the contact problems in three dimensions, and Chapter six deals with viscoelasticity, wear and roughness. The first essay, Development of Galin's research in contact mechanics, author I.G. Goryacheva, contains four sections: Two-dimensional sliding contact of elastic bodies, Contact problem with partial slip for the inclined punch with rounded edges, Three-dimensional sliding contact of elastic bodies and Periodic contact problem. the second essay, Hertz type contact problems for power-law shaped bodies, author F.M. Borodich, deals with: frictionless axisymmetric contact, adhesive axisymmetric contact problems, self-similar contact problems and hardness measurements and depth-sensing techniques. The last essay, Further developments of Galin's stick-slip problem, author O.I. Zhupanska, deals with: the stick-slip problem in Galin's formulation, solution of the Galin stick-slip problem due to Spence and extensions to the stick-slip contact problem.
