Let \(A=KQ/I\) be a basic finite dimensional algebra over a field \(K\), where \(Q\) is the Gabriel quiver of \(A\), and \(I\) is a homogeneous admissible ideal. The entries of the \(q\)-Cartan matrix of \(A\) are the Poincaré polynomials of the graded Hom-spaces between the indecomposable projective \(A\)-modules. Thus \(q=1\) yields the ordinary Cartan matrix of \(A\). The authors determine the unimodular equivalence classes of \(q\)-Cartan matrices for gentle and skew-gentle algebras [for the latter, see \textit{C. Geiss} and \textit{J. A. de la Peña}, Bol. Soc. Mat. Mex., III. Ser. 5, No. 2, 307-326 (1999; Zbl 0959.16013); \textit{V. Bekkert, E. N. Marcos} and \textit{H. A. Merklen}, Commun. Algebra 31, No. 6, 2615-2654 (2003; Zbl 1061.16025)]. They apply their results to the calculation of derived equivalence classes (a problem which is still unsettled for gentle algebras).
