The authors consider strong solutions to the initial boundary value problem for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity in one dimension: \[ \begin{cases} \rho_t+(\rho u)_x=0, \quad \rho\geq 0 \text{ in }(0,1)\times (0,\infty),\\ (\rho u)_t+(\rho u^2)_x+ (P(\rho))_x=(\mu(\rho) u_x)_x,\\ \rho(x,0)=\rho_0(x),\;u(x,0)=u_0(x),\quad 0\leq x\leq 1,\\ u(0,t)=u(1,t)=0, \end{cases} \tag{1} \] where the unknown functions \(\rho=\rho(x,t)\) and \(u=u(x,t)\) denote the density and velocity respectively. \(P=a\rho^\gamma\) is the pressure with \(a\) being a positive constant and \(\gamma>1\). The main aim of the authors is to show the existence (and uniqueness) of global strong solution to the initial boundary value problem (1). It is worth to note, that the authors allow that the initial density may vanish in an open subset of the interval \((0,1)\) and the viscosity coefficient \(\mu\) depends on density \(\rho\).
