Let \(M\) be a four-dimensional smooth manifold. A four-metric on \(M\) is a smooth mapping \(f\) of \(M_f\) into \(\mathbb{R}^4\), where \(M_f \subset M^2\), and \(f\) determines a four-metric physical structure of rank 3 on \(M\) if {\parindent6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)] \(M_f\) is open and dense in \(M^2\); \item[(2)] \(f\) is nondegenerate, i. e., suitable Jacobians do not vanish; \item[(3)] there exists a mapping \(\Phi = (\Phi_\alpha)_{1\leqslant\alpha\leqslant 4}\) of (Im\(f)^3\) into \(\mathbb{R}^4\) such that \[ \Phi_\alpha(f(x,y), f(x,z), f(y,z)) = 0 \] for all \(x, y, z \in M\) with \((x,y), (x,z), (y,z) \in M_f\), and these relations are independent for \(1\leqslant\alpha\leqslant 4\). \end{itemize}} Condition (3) is the axiom of phenomenological symmetry and the geometry of \(M\), endowed with \(f\), is said to be phenomenologically symmetric of rank 3. These definitions find their physical significance in the Kulakov theory of physical structures [\textit{Yu. I. Kulakov}, J. Sov. Math. 27, 2616--2646 (1984; Zbl 0564.70003); translation from Zap. Nauchn. Semin. Leningr. Otd. Mat. Inst. Steklova 127, 103--151 (Russian) (1983; Zbl 0521.70001)], where the classification of metric functions plays an important role. It was proven by \textit{G. G. Mikhailichenko} [Polymetric Geometries. Novosibirsk University, Novosibirsk (Russia) (2001)] that a phenomenologically symmetric geometry of rank 3 of \(M\) with a four-metric \(f\) admits a four-dimensional simply transitive local Lie group of local transformations of \(\mathbb{R}^4\) and that \(f\) is a two-variables invariant function of this group and can be found out with the help of the invariance condition. The author classifies, up to equivalence, the Lie algebras of the four-dimensional simply transitive local Lie groups of local transformations of \(\mathbb{R}^4\) and then determines, up to invertible transformations of the components and in an appropriate system of local coordinates, the four-metrics defined by these groups. He also extends these results to the case of two four-dimensional smooth manifolds \(M\) and \(N\), with \(M_f \subset M \times N\) and rank (2,2).
