Let \(\mathcal C\) be a \(2\)-Calabi-Yau triangulated category. Given a cluster-tilting object \(T\) in \(\mathcal C\) and arbitrary object \(L\) in \(\mathcal C\) the author defines a fraction \(X_L^T\in\mathbb{Q}(x_1,\dots,x_n)\). The main result of the paper asserts that the map \(\chi\colon L\mapsto X_L^T\) is a cluster character, that is (1) \(\chi(L)=\chi(M)\) whenever \(L\cong M\); (2) \(\chi(L\oplus M)=\chi(L)\chi(M)\); (3) \(\chi(L)\chi(M)=\chi(A)+\chi(B)\) for all \(L,M\in\mathcal C\) such that \(\dim\text{Ext}^1_{\mathcal C}(L,M)=1\), where \(A\) and \(B\) are middle terms of the non-split triangles \(L\to A\to M\to L[1]\) and \(M\to B\to L\to M[1]\). This is used to prove that this map induces (in the finite and the acyclic cases) a bijection between indecomposable rigid objects of the cluster category and the cluster variables, confirming a conjecture by Caldero and Keller.
