Recall that the Hausdorff measure of noncompactness of a bounded subset \(Q\) of a metric space is given by \(\chi\left(Q\right)=\inf\left\{\varepsilon>0 \mid Q\text{ has a finite }\varepsilon\text{-net}\right\}\). For a bounded linear operator \(L\) from a normed space \(X\) into a normed space \(Y\), the measure of noncompactness is defined as \(\left\| L\right\| _{\chi}=\chi\left( L\left( B\right) \right)\), where \(B\) is the closed unit ball of \(X\). Indeed, \(L\) is compact if and only if \(\left\| L\right\| _{\chi}=0\). In the present paper, the authors consider matrix transformations \(A:X\rightarrow Y\), where \(X\) and \(Y\) are BK-spaces. They characterize the measure of noncompactness of these transformations in the case when \(Y\in\left\{c_{0},c,\ell^{\infty}\right\}\) and prove that, for \(Y=c_{0}\) and \(Y=c\), the bounded linear operator \(L_{A}\) defined by a matrix transformation \(A:X\rightarrow Y\) is compact if and only if \(\left( ^{\ast}\right)\) \(\lim_{m}\sup_{n>m}\sup_{\left\| x\right\| \leq1}\left|\sum_{k}a_{nk}x_{k}\right| =0\), while in the case \(Y=\ell^{\infty}\), the condition \(\left( ^{\ast}\right)\) is only sufficient for compactness of \(L_{A}\). These results enable the authors to characterize compact matrix transformations in spaces of sequences that are strongly \(\alpha\)-bounded or \(\alpha\)-summable.
