It is shown that for a Valdivia compact space \(X\) and a Cardinal number \(\kappa\), \(w(X) \leq \kappa\) if and only if \(p(C_p(X)) \leq \kappa\), where \(p(Y)\) denotes the point-finite cellularity of a space \(Y\) (the supremum of cardinalities of point-finite families of nonempty open subsets of \(Y\)). If \(X\) is a compact LOTS, then \(w(X)= p(C_p(X))\). A direct consequence of these two results is that if \(X\) is either a compact LOTS or a Valdivia compact space, then \(X\) is metrizable if and only if \(p(C_p(X))\) is countable.
