Relative duality is a useful tool in algebraic geometry. In the present paper, the authors prove a version of it in Voevodsky's triangulated category of geometric motives \(DM_{gm}(k)\), where \(k\) is a (perfect) field which admits resolution of singularities in the sense of Friedlander and Voevodsky. More precisely, let \(X\) be a smooth proper \(k\)-variety of pure dimension \(n\), and let \(Y, Z\) be two disjoint closed subsets of \(X\). Then the authors' main result states that there is an isomorphism \[ M(X-Z,Y)\cong M(X-Y,Z)^*(n)[2n], \] where \(M(X-Z,Y)\) and \(M(X-Y,Z)\) are relative Voevodsky motives inside \(DM_{gm}(k)\) (cf. [\textit{V. Voevodsky}, in: Cycles, transfers, and motivic homology theories. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press. Ann. Math. Stud. 143, 188--238 (2000; Zbl 1019.14009)]). This result is still true after applying any tensor functor from \(DM_{gm}(k)\), in particular one of the realization functors from [\textit{M. Levine}, Mixed Motives. Mathematical Surveys and Monographs. 57. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS). (1998; Zbl 0902.14003)]. The proof uses the theory of Gysin morphisms as well as Voevodsky's machinery.
