The authors give a series of results on the action of pseudodifferential operators (PDOs) on Lebesgue spaces with variable exponents; more generally, they study the action of PDOs on Sobolev spaces with variable Lebesgue exponents and variable regularity indices. They show first natural results for the action of PDOs with symbols in the usual Hörmander classes. They study then spectral properties: for symbols slowly oscillating at infinity, they give a necessary and sufficient ellipticity condition ensuring that the corresponding operators are Fredholm. They also characterize the essential spectra of operators with slowly oscillating symbols. Finally, they state extensions of these results in the case of weighted spaces by considering symbols than can be continued analytically with respect to the momentum variable.
