The author proposes a series of conjectures (morphic conjectures) related to the Grothendieck standard conjectures but in the framework of morphic cohomology (see [Ann. Math. (2) 136, No. 2, 361--428 (1992; Zbl 0788.14014)], where \textit{E. M. Friedlander} and \textit{H. B. Lawson} defined morphic cohomology). Furthermore, the author proves relations among his conjectures, the Grothendieck standard conjectures and some related conjectures by Friedlander and Mazur. The morphic cohomology groups are given an inductive limit of mixed Hodge structures. These structures are then related to the usual Hodge structure in the case of smooth projective varieties. The author proceeds to construct signatures which generalize the usual signature and then he states the morphic conjectures. After establishing various relations between his conjectures and the standard conjectures he presents the notion of an abstract Hodge index theorem which contains the usual Hodge index theorem with respect to the Lefschetz operator as a special case. In the last section the corresponding Hodge index theorem for morphic cohomology is proved assuming one of the morphic conjectures.
