Let \(R\) be a semiprime ring with center \(Z\) and Utumi quotient ring \(U\), and let \(S\) be a nonempty subset of \(R\). An additive map \(D\colon R\to R\) is called a generalized derivation if there exists a derivation \(\delta\) such that \(D(xy)=xD(y)+\delta(x)y\) for all \(x,y\in R\). A map \(f\colon R\to R\) is called strong commutativity-preserving (scp) on \(S\) if \([f(x),f(y)]=[x,y]\) for all \(x,y\in S\). The authors show first that if \(a\in U\) and \(\delta\) is a derivation on \(R\) such that the generalized derivation given by \(D(x)=xa+\delta(x)\) is scp on a right ideal \(\rho\), then \(\delta(\rho)\rho\subseteq Z\). For noncommutative prime rings, they characterize the nonzero generalized derivations which are scp on a nonzero ideal (resp. a nonzero right ideal). The right ideal result is complicated, but the only nonzero generalized derivations which are scp on a nonzero ideal are the identity map and its negative.
