Let \(\mathfrak{g}\) be the Lie algebra of a connected reductive group \(G\) over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. The Zassenhaus variety of \(\mathfrak{g}\) is the maximal spectrum of the center \(Z\) of the universal enveloping algebra of \(\mathfrak{g}\). In this paper the author confirms two conjectures related to the Zassenhaus variety under some mild assumptions on \(G\). Namely, the author shows that the field of fractions of \(Z\) is rational (and hence the Zassenhaus variety is a rational variety), confirming a conjecture of J. Alev. Furthermore, the author shows that \(Z\) is a unique factorization domain, confirming a conjecture of A. Braun and C. Hajarnavis. Both conjectures were proved earlier in type \(A\) by \textit{A. Premet} and the author [see, J. Algebra 294, No. 1, 177--195 (2005; Zbl 1097.17010)]. The proof for the general case, given in the present paper, is quite different since the arguments for type \(A\) do not work in general.
