The author shows that the universal map from a Hopf algebra over a field to its enveloping Hopf algebra with bijective antipode is an epimorphism in the category of Hopf algebras. This provides examples of epimorphisms of Hopf algebras, which are not surjective. The dual situation, concerned with the injectivity of monomorphisms in the category of Hopf algebras, is also considered.
