With this article, the author sets up an axiomatic way to consider various closure operations and their special parts. In particular, the author focuses on the special parts of tight closure, Frobenius and integral closure. The ring is assumed to be Noetherian local. Some of the results are obtained for modules, but the majority are concerning the special parts of various closures for ideals. He establishes the special part of the Frobenius closure and proves that one can decompose this closure using the special part of the closure, see Proposition 4.3. As an application he obtains that the Frobenius spread is well defined. He shows an analogue of a Briançon-Skoda kind of theorem for the special parts of integral closure and their relation to the special part of tight closure, Proposition~7.4. Particular attention is given to the special part of integral closure. An interesting application is a combinatorial way to compute the special part of the integral closure of a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over a field, Proposition~8.2. He shows that it is also a monomial ideal and provides a way to compute it via the Newton polygon. Furthermore, he determines a necessary and sufficient condition for decomposing the integral closure of an ideal in terms of the special part of the integral closure, namely \(\overline{I}=I+I^{-sp}\), Corollary~8.3.
