The purpose of this paper is to extend the formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology introduced by \textit{A. Connes} and \textit{H. Moscovici} in [Commun. Math. Phys. 198, 199--246 (1998; Zbl 0940.58005)] and [Lett. Math. Phys. 48, 97--108 (1999; Zbl 0941.16024)] to the setting of braided monoidal abelian categories. The authors introduce the notion of stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld module over a Hopf algebra in such a category, and prove that a para-cocyclic object can be associated to any braided Hopf algebra endowed with a braided modular pair in involution. If the category is not symmetric, this para-cocyclic object is almost never cocyclic, but it gives rise to a cocyclic object, by restricting to a certain subspace. When the category is symmetric, the para-cocyclic object is cocyclic and moreover, a full formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology with coefficients can be defined.
