The main result of the paper is an unconditional ratio theorem for multiparameter actions: Let \(\{T^u\}_{u\in\mathbb Z^d}\) be a free, nonsingular ergodic action on a standard \(\sigma\)-finite measure space. Let \(\|\cdot\|\) be a norm on \(\mathbb R^d\) and let \(B_n =\{u\in\mathbb Z^d: \|u\|\leq n\}\). Then \(\forall f,g\in L^1\) with \(\int g\neq 0\), we have \[ R_n (f,g)= \frac{\sum_{u\in B_n}{\cap T}^u f}{\sum_{u\in B_n}{\cap T}^u g} @>>{n\rightarrow\infty}> \frac{\int f}{\int g} \] almost everywhere. A similar result holds for \({\mathbb R}^d\)-actions. The proof relies on geometric properties of norms, including the Besicovitch covering lemma and the fact that the boundaries of balls have lower dimension than the ambient space.
