For a subset \(A\) of a real Banach space \(X\) and \(x\in X\), put \(\phi_A(x)=\sup\{\|x-z\| : z\in A\}\), \(F_A(x)=\{z\in A : \|x-z\|=\phi_A(x)\} \) and \(R(A)=\{x\in X : F_A(x)\neq \emptyset\}.\) A subspace \(Y\) of \(X\) is called ball remotal (BR) if \(R(B_Y)=X\) and densely ball remotal (DBR) if \(R(B_Y)\) is norm dense in \(X,\) where \(B_Y\) stands for the closed unit ball of \(Y\). The subspace \(Y\) is called a \((*)\)-subspace if \(\phi_{B_Y}(x)= \phi_{B_X}(x)=\|x\|+1\) for all \(x\in X.\) The paper is concerned with the study of these properties in the case when \(Y\) is a subspace of \(C(K),\) the space of all (real or complex valued) continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space \(K\). A key role in this study is played by the set \(K_0=\{t\in K : \exists g\in S_Y,\, |g(t)|=1\}\). For instance, \(\bullet\) if \(K_0\) is finite, then \(Y\) is BR in \(C(K)\) (Proposition 2.7); \(\bullet\) if \(K_0=K\), then \(Y\) is a \((*)\)- and BR subspace of \(C(K)\) (Theorem 2.10); \(\bullet\) \(Y\) is a \((*)\)- and DBR subspace of \(C(K)\) iff \(\overline{K_0}=K\) (Theorem 2.13); \(\bullet\) any \(M\)-ideal in \(C(K)\) is a DBR subspace of \(C(K)\) (Theorem 5.5); \(\bullet\) if \(K\) has no isolated points, then every finite-codimensional subspace of \(C(K)\) is a \((*)\)- and DBR subspace of \(C(K)\) (Theorem 4.2). Connections with boundaries (in particular, with the Choquet boundary) for the subspace \(Y\) are also investigated. The obtained results complete similar results on ball remotality obtained by the first author in a series of papers, written in cooperation with various coauthors; see, for instance, [\textit{P. Bandyopadhyay} and \textit{T. Paul}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 369, No.~2, 525--536 (2010)], and the references cited therein.
